What Do Fish Eat?

How do you know what fly to to use? This is the question fly fishers ask themselves. The answer lies in knowing what food sources (primarily insects) are available in the streams and lakes we fish. Sometimes we see insects flying around and trout leaping out of the water to snag a juicy morsel. But what was that fly? How can you "match the hatch" if you don't know what that insect is. Maybe a Caddis, Pale Morning Dun, Blue Wing Olive, etc.  If there's no hatch, what do you use? 90% of a trout's diet is composed of insects eaten below the surface. Now what? They are eating insect larva, pupae, and emergers. What flies represent these stages of an insects' life cycle?
Come to the mini-class and learn all about entomology.
