PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION

In February, we welcome back local personality, guide, and crowd favorite Glenn Ueda with an exciting new program sure to inspire the more adventurous among us. His presentation follows a tireless search for the most powerful cold‑water fly‑rod species found only in remote, fly‑in destinations.

Your journey begins in Southeast Alaska on the intimate ten‑mile Katalla River, home to an annual run of ten‑thousand chrome‑bright Silver Salmon. Arguably the most sporting of all salmon, Coho are acrobatic, aggressive, and famously fond of topwater flies—whether they’re holding in brackish tidal pools, grass‑lined beaver ponds, or cobbled upstream riffles. From there, you’ll fly deep into the Yukon’s pristine Toobally Lakes to stalk shallow reefs and points for big, powerful Lake Trout and hard‑charging Northern Pike.

A side trip for beautifully adorned Arctic Grayling will put a deep bend in your 4‑weight as you skate Elk Hair Caddis across the surface. The adventure concludes with a 250‑mile flight through the rugged, snow‑covered Alaska Range to the mighty Holitna River—one of the few places on earth where you can pursue exotic, tarpon‑like sheefish. As a bonus, Glenn’s presentation includes generous giveaways from his sponsors, Orvis and Scientific Anglers.

More About Your Presenter

A Southern California native, Glenn was introduced to surf fishing as a child by his father. From Morro Bay to San Onofre, they caught their own bait and targeted everything from striped bass to barred perch to corbina. Inspired by Field & Stream, Glenn learned basic fly casting and tying at the world‑famous Long Beach Casting Club at age ten.

A local pond became his playground for bluegill, crappie, and bass. Nearly five decades later, after a rewarding career in architecture, he sought new challenges and founded So Cal Flats Fishing Guide Service, teaching fly anglers the art of sight‑fishing in shallow surf for one of the world’s most challenging species—the California Corbina. Many seasoned anglers agree that our “Ghost of the Coast” can be as difficult, if not more so, than the coveted flats permit.

Glenn’s passion for the sport extends far beyond guiding. His annual calendar is filled with presentations and tying demonstrations at Southern California fly shops including Fishermen’s Spot, Bob Marriott’s Fly Fishing Store, Orvis Pasadena, and The Fly Stop. His programs—Ghost of the Coast, Midnight Madness, and Planet Carp—have been enthusiastically received by clubs from Santa Barbara to San Diego.

He has written and collaborated on numerous feature articles for Fly Fisherman, Fly Fusion, Sport Fishing, Saltwater Sportsman, California Fly Fisher, Pacific Sportfishing Magazine, and Western Outdoor News.

His love of sight‑fishing has taken him around the world in pursuit of exotic species: Baja roosterfish, dorado, and tuna; Belizean permit, tarpon, and bonefish; Christmas Island trevally, triggerfish, and milkfish; Amazon peacock bass, wolffish, and arowana; Argentinian golden dorado, pacu, and pira pita; and most recently, Colombia’s “vampire fish,” the payara.

Fishing more than 150 days a year, he also pursues carp from Los Angeles canals to Montana reservoirs to the narrow waterways of Japan. His popular Loco Moco carp fly has followers across the U.S. and throughout Asia, Europe, and Australia.

With a background in long‑range big‑game fishing, Glenn also enjoys offshore adventures from his 20’ Edgewater center console. His home waters of the Eastern Pacific offer California Yellowtail, Pacific Bonito, Calico Bass, and Barracuda, along with seasonal yellowfin tuna and dorado—all eager to crush a well‑presented fly.

To date, Glenn has landed 132 species on fly, and he is especially proud of his IGFA Fly Rod World Records for California Corbina on 4‑, 12‑, and 16‑pound tippet, all caught and released on his local beach.

When not fishing, Glenn and his wife of 39 years, Mona, enjoy traveling to Japan to visit their son Randy and family, spending time outdoors with their dog Mac, and strolling the sand near their home in Huntington Beach.
