For the SBFF meeting we will take a quick look at the diversity of local fly fishing options, then take a deeper dive into the fly fishing opportunities at Cachuma Lake.

Cachuma is a beautiful reservoir which is mostly undeveloped and offers wonderful scenery and nature viewing. Even in 2024 southern California most of the shoreline is untouched and natural. Deer, Bald Eagle, Osprey, Red Tail Hawks, Coyotes, Bobcats, wild pigs, Black Bear, Canadian Geese and more are on display daily. A day on the water at Cachuma re-connects you directly with nature and feels like being a million miles from the crowds of Southern California. It can also be a terrific place to fly fish.

Cachuma is a notoriously challenging lake to fish with any type of gear. Fishing can be anywhere from automatic to downright difficult at times. However, being there at the right time, with the right equipment and presentations can lead to fantastic fly fishing. We'll cover the different species of fish in the lake that we can effectively target as fly anglers. We will touch on equipment, rigging, flies, presentations, timing and tactics for catching the variety of species on offer at Cachuma. We will also look at an overview of the Santa Ynez/Cachuma watershed in an effort to better understand the geography, the importance of water, stream connectivity, and its impact on the fishery.

This will be a good introduction to local fly fishing opportunities for new club members, anglers new to the area, and resident fly fishers who want to get out and fish more!

For experienced anglers and those who fish Cachuma, this will help you to develop a versatile set of skills and presentations to meet the challenges of the day and catch more fish.  Of course there will be a slideshow with beautiful Cachuma scenery, fish pics, flies, and examples of the equipment / tactics I have come to trust over the years of fishing and guiding clients on Cachuma lake.  Good chance there are a few stories and a few laughs, and we will leave some time at the end for Q & A to address any questions on tap.  I look forward to seeing you there!
